It makes us so elated in experiencing the changing phase of Bollywood. Glimpse through previous week’s releases: A Wednesday, Mumbai Meri Jaan, Rock On, Phoonk, 1920, Saas Bahu Aur Sensex, Hello and today’s release. Gone are those days, where filmmakers penned the clichéd plotline of beating the same bush of protagonist falling in love and bumping off baddies.
These films can be illustrious for shifting paradigms in Hindi film industry. None of these films had the best leading Khans, Kapoors or Kumars dominating the show. Hats off to aspiring filmmakers, they’ve have been making Bollywood - a synonym of Indian film industry at international standards.
So, how about EMI (Easy Monthly Installments)? The film falls under the same genre of an exceptional theme. But Director Saurabh Kadra falls off in executing a good concept. In simple terms, the verdict could be – An interesting theme and poor screenplay, drops down your interests on halfway of 130mins… What saves the film from bad critics is top-notching performance by Sanjay Dutt as ‘Bhai’.
With similar characterization caricatured on him with ‘Munnbhai Series’, Sanjay Dutt plays the role of a kind hearted goon transforming lives of perplexed individuals.
Untimely calls – either manual or automated computerized voices; the animated voices of phone calls of bank about loans has turned be the anthem of metropolitan cities of Mumbai to small time towns. Yeah! The film EMI is about banks, bank loans, credit cards, bank defaulters, collection officers at their doorsteps. Nevertheless, things get scattered out of topic post interval and that’s it, you have the ultimate spoiler.
Sattar Bhai (Sanjay Dutt), owner of Good Luck Recovery Agency is entitled as ‘Savior’ for various banks in town. When things cannot be handled smoothly from defaulters, it’s our Bhai who settles scores. So, what’s the lifetime notion of ‘Bhai’ – fleet from this business and then into politics. Not bad, an impressive dream and Sattar Bhai has great support from the officials of banks, telecom companies and various multinationals.
His Good Luck Recovery Agency being one of the best concern in town, Sattar Bhai follows simple principle when it comes to his terms of business: - Loan liya hai to chukao, shaadi kiya hai to nibhao.
Such a great personality encounters various defaulters Anil-Shilpa [Aashish Chowdhary-Neha Uberoi], Father-Son Chandrakant-Arjun [Kulbhushan, Kharbanda], Dj Ryan and his ladylove Prerna [Arjun Rampal-Malaika Arora Khan] and widowed Prerna [Urmila Matondkar]… , where he experiences their personal problems and offers solutions to them…
Would he accomplish putting an end to their problems or not forms rest of the story?
As mentioned earlier, good theme gets spoiled by the light-headed screenplay and director Saurabh Kadhra should’ve have taken these aspects into consideration,
Not all of the star-casts are filled with good performance. Arjun Rampal breathes live on his characterization while Kulbhushan Kharbanda takes on with same tempo. Malaika Arora is just for glamour and nothing to perform there. Urmila does emote well to different scenarios, but not more importance has been rendered on her character…
Musical score by Chirantan Bhatt is somewhat off second-rate quality. Except couple of melodies, ‘Aankhon Mein Aankhon Hi’ and ‘Har Dil Roshan’, nothing deserves special mention.
Cinematography and editing is merely of inferior quality and director should have again focused on these aspects too…
On the whole, EMI is a film that isn’t up to the expected levels that was raised with the scintillating promos. But, the film runs short off it and if Sanjay Dutt wasn’t there, you would run out of theatres during second hour of the film.
